A collaboration between Pilkington United Kingdom Limited and NBS National BIM Library. The collaboration has taken place in order to make its IGU products and Pilkington Planar™ models for structural glazing available online for architects and specifiers to access.
Pilkington is part of the NSG Group and is the UK manufacturer of Pilkington glass. The Group also offers a wide range of float, coated, rolled, laminated and toughened glass products. Accessing Building Information Modelling, or BIM, through the collaboration with NBS will allow the company to improve their decision making processes as well as improving the efficiency and cost effectiveness of building construction. The BIM also allows modelling of the building for performance by giving users access to detailed information regarding each building product used. This information includes dimensions as well as material properties and energy performance. The NSG Group has joined what is thought to be the fastest growing BIM library in the UK by collaborating with the NBS National BIM Library.
Both architects and specifiers that use the National BIM Library will now have access to the product information for Pilkington’s high performance thermal insulating and solar control products as well as their structural glazing systems. Being a part of the BIM means that there will be more informed decisions made when choosing and integrating products into the design of buildings.
BIM is a government based initiative that that makes sure each product that is used in a design has its own data. This makes the process of specification in a building quicker and easier and will allow customers to make more informed decisions on the products that are available. This facility also leads to a more collaborative approach in the construction industry and will also give architects the ability to walk clients through an environment on a virtual platform before it is built.
